Dr. Kung received his PhD degree in 1973 from Stanford University. He was a staff scientist and later a senior scientist in the Lawrence National Berkeley Laboratory from 1975 to 1994, and directed the NSF Regional Laser Center from 1980 to 1988. He joined the Institute of Atomic and Molecular Sciences of the Academia Sinica in Taiwan in 1994. In 2009 he transferred to the Institute of Photonics Technologies at NTHU as the director of the institute. Dr. Kung made significant contributions in phase-matched harmonic generation in gases, nonlinear spectroscopy, and solid state tunable lasers. He is a leading expert in soft x-ray and optical waveform generation.
